Malus Import Health Standard Consultation

07 Dec 2020

The Ministry for Primary Industries has undertaken a partial review of the import rules for apple (Malus) nursery stock, bringing the standard into line with changes made to the stonefruit (Prunus) standard late last year.

The closing date for submissions is 18 December. NZ Plant Producers will submit on the proposed changes on behalf of our industry members.

The Ministry proposes to remove the requirement for woody index testing for some diseases where there is no known causal agent. Woody indexing is a lengthy process, so removing this requirement will save time in quarantine in New Zealand.

NZ Plant Producers supported this proposal during the pre-consultation phase and recommended other adjustments to the offshore and onshore quarantine periods to allow plant material to be released from quarantine sooner.
