Conference workshop: Advanced Hort Plants Innovation Lab

19 Oct 2022

Lincoln University Plant Scientist Clive Kaiser took a quick survey of the audience showing that almost all of them had trials or experiments underway in their businesses.  Trials are central to improving productivity and integrating sustainability practices that suit the business.

Clive took us through the steps to plan and run simple trials, using approaches that ensure that the outcomes were meaningful and gave accurate results for decision making.  Understanding the basics principles of experimental design and managing the factors that can influence the results are key.

R&D & Innovation manager at Eurofins, Alistair Mowat highlighted how new technologies, like microbiome testing and sensors, will enable producers to accurately control the range of factors that affect plant health and productivity.

Advanced Hort MD Nathan Hewson discussed how planning and documentation are the key to successful innovation projects.  This involves financial analysis and project planning, through to staff training and support. Too many innovation projects in our industry underperform or have to be redone when this is not done correctly.

Getting this right has a significant payoff. Nathan gave examples of new technology like, Ellepot, and smaller innovations like dynamic fan systems, LED lighting and handling equipment add up to significant cost savings over time.

Appreciation goes to Advanced Hort for kindly sponsoring this workshop.
