PLASTICS WASTE

We have taken substantial steps in addressing plastic waste within the plant production industry.

Through our Plastics Advisory Committee, established in 2022, we have developed a comprehensive framework aimed at reducing plastic use and promoting recycling.

Our efforts include encouraging the transition to Polypropylene (PP5) pots and lighter-coloured containers, which are more easily recyclable through kerbside collection schemes.

We have also partnered with Agrecovery to implement a Product Stewardship Scheme, which focuses on collecting and recycling plastics used in plant production. This initiative supports both environmental sustainability and industry efficiency by offering a responsible end-of-life solution for plastic products.

In May 2026, Agrecovery launched a new user-pays rural collection and recycling trial for bulk used rigid plastic pot and trays.

Although not a funded product stewardship scheme, this trial is a fantastic first step for plant producers to manage their plastic waste sustainably. NZPPI will support Agrecovery as it continues to develop a voluntary scheme for plant pots and trays. Find out more about the Agrecovery trial.
