The latest edition of Plant Production Science (Issue 5) highlights advances in plant genetics and breeding, crucial for New Zealand’s plant production sector.

Supported by NZPPI members, the publication shares insights from local and global experts. Topics covered include:

  • Disease-resistant Crops: new rootstocks for apples, avocados, and cherries improve resilience against major diseases and reduce fungicide use.
  • Emerging markets: trials with specialty coffee and new berry crops show strong commercial potential.
  • Urban forestry: drought-tolerant maples and columnar oaks offer sustainable solutions for urban landscapes.
  • Gene-editing and speed breeding: tools like CRISPR are accelerating cultivar development and improving global competitiveness.
