The NZPPI Plastics Advisory Committee (PAC) is proud to share that it has made significant progress towards its goals in its first year. Our committee has focused on gathering commitment, defining the problem, and identifying opportunities and solutions for plant production plastic waste.
One of its key initiatives has been to gather insights from our members and industry partners across different sectors. We've been working closely with our packaging consultant, Nikki Withington, who has been running workshops with members to identify challenges and opportunities with plant pots.
These workshops will result in a solution-focused waste hierarchy, which will help define the next steps towards a Product Stewardship Scheme. We're excited to announce that this work will be released in our upcoming plastics publication, due in May.
Last month, PAC visited Scion, where we discussed alternate materials for biopots and steps towards Product Stewardship. We learned that while bio-based materials may seem like a great alternative, they don't always biodegrade. That's why it's essential to be aware of the difference between industrial composting and home compost conditions. We highly recommend checking out the attached PDF for further clarity on this topic.
Overall, we're thrilled with the progress we've made in the past year and are eager to keep the momentum going. Our committee is dedicated to finding sustainable solutions for plastic waste in our sector and we appreciate your support and engagement.
