NZPPI Cyclone Response

NZPPI response

The recent flooding and cyclone have been truly devastating events with the loss of lives, homes, businesses, services and vital infrastructure.  Our thoughts are with everyone affected.

NZPPI is part of the adverse events network that includes MPI and the horticulture industry associations. While communications have been difficult, we are in contact with our affected members, connecting them to advice and support services. If you haven’t heard from us please get in touch so that we can connect you within the support network.

While most of the damage in our industry has been minor to moderate damage, a small number of our members have been heavily impacted. The extent of damage and the longer term impacts on our sector will become clear over the coming weeks.

We will continue to pass on information as it comes available particularly on financial support and business continuation, but also on supporting people and protecting plants in the future. Longer term, this event will have a significant impact on grower and farmers, who are closely connected to our industry. We will update you soon on how this support will be provided.

In the meantime, HortNZ has very valuable information on flood support on its website.

Government response

The Government has announced two support packages to help cyclone-hit businesses and rebuild roads, along with the new role of Cyclone Recovery Minister and a special taskforce.

Newly appointed Cyclone Recovery Minister and Finance Minister Grant Robertson said on Monday that a $50 million fund will go to help businesses and the primary sector. More on the announcement can be found here.
