Inaugural NZPPI Sustainable Futures Award

30 May 2023

This award was created to recognise exceptional contribution in improving sustainability in plant production.

Presented during the NZPPI 2023 Conference Dinner to Nick Martin Floriculture.

Nick is the owner and operator of a nursery business specialising in the production of young plants for flower growers and for ornamental nurseries.
For the past 15 or so years he has been heating the propagating bed/houses with under-bench hot water generated by Rinnai Infinity water heaters powered by LPG gas.  This system has been very reliable but costly to run.

Several years ago he needed to increase the heated growing-on area. A good friend who works at Rinnai was looking for an opportunity to trial a new hot water Heat Pump. The 16kw single phase Heat Pump circulates hot water through a system of re-cycled corrugated pipes (salvaged from a rose grower customer) which he installed under the growing-on benches.

The hot water Heat Pump provides fully controlled, even and efficient bottom heat to the young plants. This has resulted in a faster footprint turn-around and a healthier more vigorous resulting plant.
