The Government's recently released climate change strategy highlights that New Zealand is off track to meet its climate targets.
The reports underscore the critical need for enhanced efforts to meet planting targets and the vital role of large scale afforestation in mitigating climate change. The plan was published in August, laying out how the Government will meet greenhouse gas budgets on the way to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The Government's response includes a major tree planting initiative, requiring more than 30,000 hectares planted annually for the next 25 years to meet the targets.
This approach requires a long-term plan and commitment from Government, including all political parties, in order to attract and maintain the resources and capacity needed. Scaling up to meet this new level of planting will require greater confidence in the industry and the right business settings to encourage large scale, successful planting programmes.
NZPPI is in regular discussion with Te Uru Rākau / NZ Forestry Service on the issue of planting programmes.
