Path to sustainable plastics use

13 Dec 2023

Thanks to member input on plastic regulations and sustainable practices, we're developing a tailored framework with the Plastics Advisory Committee that benefits both our industry and the wider community.

In 2024, we're focusing on several key actions for a greener future:

1. Collaborative framework for plastic use and recycling: We're setting up working groups to lead two pivotal initiatives: the implementation of a Product Stewardship Scheme for recycling plastics used in plant production, and the development of guidelines for the use of sustainable alternative materials. We invite industry members to join these efforts, ensuring that our approach to sustainability is a collective endeavour.

2. Advocacy and integration of recycling practices: Our goal is to align with the Ministry for the Environment's (MfE) criteria to include plant pots in nationwide kerbside recycling programmes. To achieve this, we're moving towards the use of Polypropylene (PP5) and lighter-coloured pots and will advocate for the industry's inclusion in kerbside recycling initiatives.

3. Product stewardship scheme development with Agrecovery: By joining the Green-farms Product Stewardship Scheme (GPSS) and establishing a co-design advisory group, we aim to enhance our industry's stewardship of plastic products.

These steps reflect our dedication to responsible plastic usage, shared responsibility, and proactive engagement with stakeholders. As we look to the new year, NZPPI will be reaching out for participants to join our working groups, driving these sustainable initiatives forward.

Stay tuned for opportunities to be part of this sustainable transformation!
