Our next SHED meeting will be held at Strik's Nursery in Otaki. We will be exploring the theme of 'Sustainable Energy Solutions for Greenhouses'. Please note this has been postponed until we are at Alert Level 1. Please keep an eye out when Alert Levels reduce and we can set a date.
SHED stands for See, Hear, Engage, Debate. They are a chance for members from around a region to come together to connect and share ideas and expertise.
At this SHED meeting we will have the opportunity to see Strik's Nursery's ornamental and house plant focused production. With plans for further expansion, a new greenhouse is the works. But with recent Resource Management Act changes specifically targeting greenhouses and their heating, what are the sustainable and cost-effective ways of providing energy to greenhouses in NZ in the near future?
We will be joined by Greig Wilson and Gerald Crawford from DETA Consulting. DETA provides a complete consultancy service to help businesses control energy use, reduce their carbon footprint and deliver energy improvement projects. They will be speaking to us about work underway now on a decarbonisation pathway for covered crops – there are opportunities to use less energy and options to switch from high carbon to low carbon fuels - and how that might transfer across to plant producers.
A shared lunch provided to all attendees at the Rotary Lounge up the road from Strik's nursery. This will be followed by some updates from NZ Plant Producers, and we will hear from our guest speakers. A short 5 minute drive away is Strik's Nursery where we will be led on a tour of the nursery, with an open forum discussion to round out the afternoon.
Lunch and afternoon tea will be provided - please inform us of any dietary requirements.
