Malus Import Health Standard consultation

16 Nov 2020

The Ministry for Primary Industries has undertaken a partial review of the import rules for apple (Malus) nursery stock, bringing the standard into line with changes made to the stonefruit (Prunus) IHS made late last year.

The closing date for submissions is the 18 December. NZPPI will be making a submission on the proposed changes on behalf of our industry members.

MPI are proposing to remove the requirement for woody index testing for a number of diseases, where there is no known causal agent. Woody indexing is a lengthy process, so removing this requirement will save time in quarantine in New Zealand.

NZPPI supported this proposal during the pre-consultation phase and recommended other adjustments to the offshore and onshore quarantine periods to allow plant material to be released from quarantine in a more timely way.
