Financial support for COVID-19-affected businesses

The government’s initial support package has help for businesses, employees, sole traders and contractors.

It covers businesses with reduced turnover, and business that have lost staff due to self-isolation.

Do you qualify?

You can qualify for the COVID-19 Wage Subsidy if your business:

  • Has a 30% decline in actual or predicted revenue over one month, compared to the same month in 2019, due to COVID-19
  • Has taken active steps to mitigate COVID-19
  • Makes best efforts to retain employees at a minimum of 80% for 12 weeks.

The Wage Subsidy is a one-off payment. It is for wages only, to keep your staff employed.

You can qualify for COVID-19 Leave Payments if you or your staff are unable to work.

To qualify you or your staff must be self-isolating, sick with COVID-19, or caring for dependents who are self-isolating or sick.

Leave Payments are made to employers to pass on to employees in full. They cover full-timers, part-timers, casuals and contractors.

How can I apply?

You can apply for either subsidy online at Work and Income.

You will need:

  • Your IRD number
  • Your business name
  • Business address
  • Your employees' names and IRD numbers
  • Contact details for you and your employees.
