1 August 2016
Congratulations to Daniel Howard of Moores Valley Nurseries who won the Young Achiever title for 2016 at the NGINZ annual conference in Wellington, July 27 & 28.
Three finalists, Daniel, Morgan Hooper from Tharfield Nursery and Jed Walker from Waimea Nurseries, competed in a number of activities during conference. Daniel was announced as the winner Thursday night at the Gala Dinner at Te Papa museum.
"I was encouraged to enter the Young Achiever competition by my employer and fellow work colleagues as an aspiring young person in the industry. Competing in the competition and attending conference proved to be a great networking opportunity to meet fellow industry people, and the contacts that were made are invaluable. I encourage other young achievers in the industry to give the competition a go."
Special thanks must go to the sponsors, Hortfert Plus and Primary ITO, and the judges Carol Fraser, Grant Eyre, Mark Stephenson, Marco van den Berg, Andrew & Lisa Bowman for their time and hard work in preparing for this award.
Daniel will represent the nursery and garden industry in the Young Horticulturist of the Year competition, in November, managed by the RNZIH Education Trust, where the Grand Final offers a prize pool of more than $35,000. And following this, Daniel can enjoy his Young Achiever prize of a 4 night trip to Melbourne, taking in a visit to the 2017 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.
